Karnataka: At Karnataka’s Gorta village on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a memorial and raised a 103-foot-tall Tricolor in honour of the hundreds of people who were slain by the army of the Nizams in 1948 for raising the national flag. The union minister added that Sardar Patel, India’s first home minister, had a significant impact on the removal of the Nizam from Hyderabad, which allowed Bidar to join India. “In this Gorta village, hundreds of people were killed by the army of a cruel Nizam for hoisting just a 2.5-ft tall Tricolour. Today, I proudly say that on the same land, we have hoisted a 103-ft tall Tricolour that can’t be hidden from anyone,” Amit Shah said.

Hoisting the tricolour became lawful throughout the Indian subcontinent on August 15
The fiercest battle against Hyderabad Nizam took place in the small town of Gorta in the Karnataka province of Bidar in May 1948. Although hoisting the tricolour became lawful throughout the Indian subcontinent on August 15, 1947, it remained offensive in some areas that were a part of the Princely State of Hyderabad. On September 17, 1948, the Hyderabad state was finally freed from Nizam’s control. Yet, this village in the Bidar district was the scene of a slaughter by the Razakars, an army of the Nizams, three months before to the independence, in May 1948. A small group of people raised the tricolour in the Bidar district’s Hannalli and surrounding Halagorta villages as the beginning of everything. Isamuddin, the local Razakar chief, and Nizam police arrested Baurao Patil, who was leading a small group of people to hoist the national flag, after they had taken Honnalli. The Razakars were unable to locate Patil and his supporters, but they had plans to avenge themselves, and they carried them out by killing Isamuddin.
Sardar Patel statue is a reminder of the crucial role
According to a report, the announcement of the opening of a memorial by Union Minister Amit Shah follows many attempts to erect a monument in memory of those killed by Razakars that were unsuccessful. The idea to erect a monument in honour of the victims of the “Gorta massacre” was never finished, despite numerous obstacles. Now, while a memorial to the martyrs was being built, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated, “A monument honouring those invincible martyrs has been built on the same property. This Sardar Patel statue, which stands 20 feet tall, is a reminder of the crucial role our first Home Minister played in driving the Nizam from Hyderabad. That is why this region, called Bidar, might join India.”
