Rahul Gandhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently expressed support for India’s stance on the ongoing Russian-Ukraine conflict during his visit to the US. Gandhi emphasised the importance of democratic nations establishing a clear vision to challenge China’s non-democratic global image. Additionally, he urged for the creation of a new production and manufacturing model that could foster a collaborative work environment between India and the US.
Gandhi, addressing students at Stanford University in California, clarified that despite his disqualification from the Indian Parliament, his international interactions were not aimed at gaining assistance in India’s domestic political scenarios, a criticism often hurled at him by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Unyielding Support for India’s Foreign Relations
Gandhi, while responding to a question regarding India’s stand on the Ukraine crisis, affirmed his approval for India’s policy. He remarked, “We’ve established ties with Russia over the years, and have certain dependencies on them. Therefore, my stance aligns with that of the Indian government. Ultimately, we must safeguard our own interests.” He further stated that given India’s size and influence, it is essential for it to maintain relations with a broad spectrum of nations.
Gandhi’s current visit to the US lasts for six days.
Gandhi Advocates for US-India Synergy Against Chinese Production Powerhouse
On the subject of US-China rivalry, Gandhi discussed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), describing it as a promise of prosperity projecting a non-democratic vision of the world. However, he voiced concerns over the absence of a comparable democratic vision. “How can we rival the Chinese production powerhouse? What would a democratic production system resemble?” Gandhi pondered, suggesting that this is an area where India and the US could collaborate and capitalize on their respective strengths.
