In Kolkata, a Metro rake sun’s under a river for the first time in the India, marking milestone for India’s fast transit system. As the metro travelled under the Hoogly river in Kolkata, the trail run was held between Howrah and Esplanade.
General Manager of Kolkata Metro P Uday Kumar Reddy called the run a historic occasion for the city of Kolkata.
“It is the first time that a train has moved below the Hoogly river. It is also the deepest station at 33 metres of depth — a first in India. This is historic moment for the city of kolkata. It will take seven months to complete the trails and after that we will be able to start regular services,” Reddy said.
On the Howrah-Esplanade stretch, commercial services are expected to launch this year. The metro is estimated to take 45 seconds to go 520 metres under the Hooghly river. The riverbed is 32 metres below this tunnel under the water.
The section of the East-West Metro corridor runs between Salt Lake, Kolkata’s information technology district, and Sector V in Howrah Maidan. The project will connect the Howrah and Sealdah Indian railway stations with the Esplanade station on the North-South line of the Kolkata Metro.
According to PTI, an official described it as a “revolutionary step” in bringing a modern the public transportation system to Kolkata and its surrounding areas.
“After many hurdles, we have succeeded to run rakes beneath the Hooghly river, a revolutionary step in the transport system of Kolkata. This is indeed a special new year gift from Indian Railways for the people of Bengal,” Metro Rail chief public relations officer Kausik Mitra told TOI.
As the first metro railway in the nation when it began in Kolkata in 1984, the development is another significant one for the Kolkata Metro. In 2002, Delhi began offering metro services.
