Twenty-one year old Arya Rajendran, the CPI(M) candidate who won from the Mudavanmukal ward in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, may become the new mayor of the Kerala capital.
The CPI(M) district committee, had a meeting on Friday following the party’s win in the recently held civic body elections, and has recommended Arya’s name as the next mayor.
The left-dominating local body in the state capital was retained by LDF, but it faced a strong setback as two of its mayoral candidates and existing mayor faced losses.
Jameela Sreedharan, a senior candidate representing Peroorkada ward in the city was initially under consideration to be the mayor.
However, there occurred a collective demand to pick a younger person for the coveted position.
This recommendation is likely to be accepted by the state committee and the final decision is likely to be announced by Saturday Arya Rajendran is a law student at All Saints College, Thiruvanathapuram.
In the just concluded civic polls, Arya won from the Mudavanmugal ward, and was reportedly the party’s youngest candidate this time.
The district secretariat recommended Arya’s name in order to push for a Mayor belonging to the younger generation.
Earlier, Jameela Sreedharan, who won from Peroorkada ward and Gayathri Babu from Vanchiyoor ward were linked to the Mayor post.
