Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel passed away in the wee hours of Wednesday, 25 November, his son Faisal Patel announced on Twitter. He was 71.
Faisal Patel said that his father had tested positive for COVID-19 a month ago, and that since then, his health had worsened due to multiple organ failures.
In a statement on Twitter, Mr. Faisal said that Ahmed Patel passed away at 3.30 am on November 25. “After testing positive for Covid-19 around a month back, his health worsened further due to multiple organ failures,” the statement went on to add.
He also requested well-wishers of his father to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines and avoid any mass gatherings to mourn the Congress leader’s demise. He was undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram since November 15.
PM Modi condoled the death of Congress veteran and said Patel was known for sharp mind and his role in strengthening the Congress Party would always be remembered.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condoled the demise of one of Sonia Gandhi’s closest political advisors and said he was a pillar of the Congress party and stood with the party through its most difficult times.
Priyanka Gandhi tweeted: “Ahmed ji was not only a wise and experienced colleague to whom I constantly turned for advice and counsel, he was a friend who stood by us all, steadfast, loyal, and dependable to the end. His passing away leaves an immense void. May his soul rest in peace.”
