Viral Video: The ruling by the Uttar Pradesh government for shopkeepers alongside the Kanwar Yatra route to fit nameplates in front of their shops has created yet another controversy. This has drawn strong reactions from politicians, film personalities, and members of the public. Actor Sonu Sood was one such response—his remarks created quite a furor.
Sonu Sood’s Viral Video Sparks Debate
Sonu Sood posted a video on his official X handle, in which he talked about the context of ‘Thuk Lagi Roti.’ He said in the video, “Our Shri Ram ji had eaten the false berries of Shabri, so why can’t I eat it?” The post went viral on social media and drew eyeballs to start the debate all over again. Bollywood actress and MP from Mandi Lok Sabha seat, Kangana Ranaut reacted to the statement made by Sood, thus adding one more layer of controversy to it.
Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government made a ruling that every shopkeeper selling items of food along the Kanwar Yatra route in parts of the state should display nameplates. The move has drawn mixed reactions, with citizens and public figures expressing their opinions for and against. Reacting to this, Sonu Sood said, “Every shop should have only one nameplate, and that is humanity.” This gesture won appreciation from many, but it was also criticized.
Kangana Ranaut Adds Fuel to the Fire
An X handle user, Sudhir Mishra posted a video with a caption saying, “The spit roti should be parceled to Sonu Sood, so that brotherhood remains.” Sood has replied again as he had said before, “Our Shri Ram ji had eaten the false berries of Shabri, so why can’t I eat it. Violence can be defeated by non-violence my brother, humanity should remain intact.” Now the video by Mishra showed a boy spitting on a roti while preparing it; the clip is said to be years old but now resurfacing in the controversy.
It was interpreted as indirect criticism of the UP government’s decision and added more fuel to the debate. Now, to Sood’s video post, Kangana Ranaut responded thus, with this statement laced with sarcasm: “Soon Sonu Sood will direct his own Ramayana based on his personal inference about God and religion. Wow! What a thing, another Ramayana from Bollywood.” This was taken far and wide as a taunt targeting Sood.
The controversy over the nameplates of Kanwar Yatra continues to brew as several public figures and citizens have joined in to debate it. Reactions underline deep-seated views that are partly against cultural and religious matters, which reflect broader tensions in society. The debate raging on underlines complexities brought forth in governance and public sentiment in contemporary India.
