Viral Video: After a video showed staff members of a private hospital close to Tambaram in Chennai strangling a cat with a plastic bucket went popular on social media, several animal activists filed a complaint with the Tamil Nadu Police on Tuesday.
A complaint on the incident that occurred on November 20 has been made to the Tambaram Police Commissionerate by Heaven for Animals (HFA), an NGO for the protection of stray animals. According to the plaintiff, the facility has brutally hurt and tortured close to 20 animals.
Viral video shows officials torturing a cat
The NGO urged the police to take strong action against the hospital and employees, alleging that the terrible conduct was carried out on the senior hospital employee’s orders. Police have opened a probe based on the complaint, according to Tambaram DCP.
The cat in the video is still able to roam freely throughout the hospital grounds, according to hospital officials, who also denied any such instance of abusing cats. The hospital’s in-charge official displayed images of a cat that resembled the one seen in the video and assured everyone that it was uninjured.
The NGO claimed in the complaint that social animals, particularly cats and dogs, have always been a part of our residential system and that it is our responsibility to maintain that ecological balance rather than injure, kill, or remove them from the land that they belong to.
Hospital issues a clarification
An employee at the hospital acknowledged that cats had posed a threat to the patients for the past four months, “We didn’t try to kill any animal; we are running a hospital to save lives. The animal scratched many patients who approached us to take action. We called a couple of NGOs but they never turned up. The staff members, after seeing the cat on that day, attempted to capture it,” he said.
He claimed that they had intended to catch them and release them in another open area, but the cat managed to get away.
“In the video, it looks like the staff members are harming the cat but it was never the case. They just held the bucket to prevent it from escaping but the cat ran away,” a hospital employee said. The hospital staff members can be seen attempting to catch the cat using a cover while forcing an empty bucket on cat in the recorded incident.
