Viral Video: In effect, the Holy month of Sawan falls on the 22nd of July in 2024 that holds much value for the devotees all over India. Thousands of Kanwar pilgrims will embark on this holy journey, carrying Kanwars with them filled with Ganga water, to offer with pouring Jalabhishek at Lord Shiva’s temples. In this annual ritual, a sudden upsurge of devotion can be seen when pilgrims cover a long distance, usually walking for days to pay homage to Lord Bholenath. In a few places, the Kanwar Yatra has already started for this year. Video of it have been doing rounds on social media ever since.

Administrative Decision on Kanwar Route Nameplates

As the Kanwar Yatra gathers momentum, Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh has come under particular focus. An innovative decision taken by the administration to have nameplates on shops along the Kanwar route had first raised eyebrows. While the move was taken to facilitate the yatra with greater ease, it was apprehended to raise the hackles of different local communities. Recent happenings in Muzaffarnagar, however, have thrown up a heartwarming counter-narrative.

A video, gone viral on social networking sites, seemed to capture an unexpected yet strong symbol of communal harmony. This clip, tweeted by a former, active handle user, Swati Mishra, and broadcast by News 24 reporter Rajiv Ranjan, presented two friends, Kanhaiya and Aslam, performing the Kanwar Yatra. Aslam, a youth from the Muslim community, has joined this spiritual journey with his Hindu friend Kanhaiya, pointing out one touching example of interfaith solidarity.

Aslam’s Personal Motivation and Communal Harmony

In the Video provided link to the video, Aslam himself states what drove him on a personal level to be part of the outing; he says it’s in support of his friend and goes ahead to state that at no time did his family or his community have issues regarding his coming to visit. This is oneness in its perfect state given the strain that was created in the short time previous created due to the directives signed regarding the nameplate banner. Although some minor skirmishes have been reported from the district over the namplate issue, the journey of Kanhaiya and Aslam together for the pilgrimage is a great testimony to communal harmony.
