Viral Video: As India approaches Independence Day 2024, a viral video on social media brings to the fore a shocking knowledge gap among the young on the origins of the Indian flag. The video, shared on the Instagram handle Nation_info_hub, shows a woman asking to a bunch of young people an Indian flag in their hands, about the designer of the flag. The shocking surprise of everyone was that not one of them was able to give an answer, which has generated comments in networks.
Youth Struggle to Identify Indian Flag Designer
The video, quickly shared on platforms, shows a woman enthusiastically asking a question to be met with blank stares and halting responses by the youth. That moment of confusion is generating quite the noise in conversations about national pride and historical awareness.
The Indian Flag was designed by an eminent freedom fighter, Pingali Venkayya, in the freedom movement of India. Surayya Tyabji finalized the current form of the Indian national flag with the charkha or spinning wheel symbol, though the original design has to be credited to Pingali Venkayya, who did the flag with a spinning wheel on it for the Indian National Congress. Tyabji’s contribution was important in finalizing the flag in its present form and was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1947.
The Values Represented by the Indian Flag’s Design
The flag contains three horizontal stripes: saffron, white, and green. It contains a navy blue Ashoka Chakra in the center. It is a design representing and embodying a blend of values: saffron standing for courage and sacrifice, white for truth and peace, and green for faith and chivalry.
The work of Pingali Venkayya and Surayya Tyabji in giving shape to the flag manifests as most important in the history of the country, much synonymous with unity and freedom. The country not only celebrates the independence today and in days to come, but this viral video shall remind the need to make aware each child about its national symbols and historical aspects.
