Viral Video: Body shaming remains an inherent issue, particularly within the South Asian region, where remarks regarding appearance are passed without any compassion as to how they can affect someone’s feelings. Recently, it emerged in Pakistan when a British couple caught on tape an uncomfortable situation during their vacation. The couple was traveling by train when the conductor came and began verbally abusing the woman on account of her body size, which caused outrage both on the train and online.
Shocking Body Shaming Incident on Pakistani Train
The incident was videoed and went viral over social media. In the video, this British tourist is shown introducing his wife to the ticket conductor, who responded with an offensive comment: “Not suitable as your wife, I think that she is so healthy.” When this tourist asked what he meant by saying so, he clarified, “Healthy means fat.”.
The woman was visibly embarrassed, struggling to composed herself, as the conductor continued to make inappropriate remarks. Though she smiled back, it was obvious that the comment had hit a nerve. The British tourist came to his wife’s rescue—scolding the conductor, saying: “This is not good Pashtun hospitality. You can’t say this. This is not nice.”.
Tourist Urges Respect Amidst Heated Exchange on Pakistani Train
This brief confrontation continued, whereby the tourist explained that respect and consideration should be given to visitors. The video ends with him nodding his head in apparent acknowledgment of his mistake, though at this time much damage had been done.
The video, shared on Twitter by the account “Ghar ka kalesh,” has gone viral since then, leading to conversations about how insensitive and at what rate body shaming is done within the region. It goes to remind everyone of the essence of not being insensitive to others’ feelings and just how damaging careless remarks can turn out to be.
