Viral Video: On Ukraine‘s Independence Day, August 24, a rather amusing incident unfolded wherein a video emerged capturing two girls (sisters) dancing on soldiers’ graves. They were later, however, detained by the authorities. Netizens, too, have criticised the girls for their immature act.
Authorities detain the girls
The video was shot in Kyiv. As visible in the video, the girl first danced off, and then in the later part another girl started twerking. The video also displayed photographs of the soldiers who had tragically lost their lives. Following its circulation, the video was eventually taken down. The girls managing the Instagram account responsible for the video issued an apology, clarifying that their intent was to honor their father’s grave at the cemetery. Despite their explanation, the video had already been shared across multiple social media platforms.
On Thursday evening, Ukrainian police came to knew about the incident and they instantly started the investigation. A statement from the Kyiv police, issued on Friday, disclosed that the authorities swiftly located the two women within a span of less than an hour, leading to their arrest. The statement outlined that the sisters could potentially face severe consequences, including a possible maximum prison sentence of up to five years. These legal actions aroused from charges of “desecration of soldiers’ graves.”

Later, more information surfaced, revealing that the two sisters had gone to the cemetery to pay their respects to the soldiers who had passed away. However, their actions in the video were controversial. The Ukrainian police later released pictures of the two women still wearing the same clothes from the video, and they were accompanied by a police officer.
