Viral Video: In Karnataka, a college instructor was suspended for contrasting a Muslim student with a “terrorist” during a lesson last week. The student’s teacher was shown in a viral video punching back at the student. The incident happened at the Manipal Institute of Technology in Udipi on Friday.
Professor refers the student as ‘Kasab’
Inquiring about the muslim student’s name, the lecturer reportedly blurted: “Oh, you are like Kasab!” Following the attacks in Mumbai on November 26, 2011, Ajmal Kasab was the only Pakistani terrorist to be found alive. He was put to death in 2012. The student confronted the lecturer and accused him of disrespecting his faith by comparing him to a terrorist in a widely circulated video.
As the teacher made an offensive remark, the student yelled in protest, “26/11 was not funny. Being a Muslim in this country and facing all this every day is not funny, sir. You can’t joke about my religion, that too in such a derogatory manner. It’s not funny sir, it’s not.”
While trying to put his stand, the teacher said “You are just like my son…” To which the student replied, “Will you talk to your son like that? Will you call him by the name of a terrorist?”
The professor quickly replied by saying ‘No.’ To which, the student replied “Then how can you call me like that in front of so many people? You are a professional, you are teaching. A sorry doesn’t change how you think or how you portray yourself here.”

Institute suspends the professor
The instructor was heard saying a brief apology. The other students only listened to the conversation. Following the video’s huge reach, the institute suspended the professor and began an investigation. According to the institute, the student was also received counselling.
