Viewers Discretion Advised
The terrifying scene where the 62-year-old mahout Balakrishnan was crushed under the elephant’s foot is captured on camera. Around 6:30 p.m., when the incident happened, Balakrishnan, a mahout from Neeleswaram, was the second mahout waiting to take guests on a safari.
Unregistered Elephant Safari Centre Under Scrutiny
The Forest Department moved quickly to shut down Kerala Farm, an illegal elephant safari centre located in Kallar, close to Adimaly, after the unfortunate incident. A stop notice was sent and a legal action was launched against the centre, according to The Hindu. It was discovered that the elephants at the centre were not registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India, which is a need for animals kept for entertainment.
Widespread Violations in Elephant Safari Operations
The event has exposed the widespread violations in the way Idukki’s elephant safari centres operate. According to media reports, only four of the 35 elephants utilised by the district’s eight safari centres are listed with the Animal Welfare Board. There are concerns regarding the safety and management procedures at these centres since the elephant that was involved in the incident had previously shown aggressive behaviour towards the mahout.
