Kanwar Yatra 2024: Days after Nameplate controversy another controversy has erupted over the Uttarakhand government's recent plan to cover mosques and a mazar (tomb) along the Kanwar Yatra route in Haridwar. Several videos of this event have surfaced on social media and gone viral. Both locals and political officials have strongly opposed the measure, which was intended to avert possible disturbance during the holy trip.

Initially, the administration directed the covering of the Islamnagar Mosque near Aryanagar and a nearby shrine on an elevated bridge. The stated aim was to prevent potential unrest and ensure the smooth conduct of the Kanwar Yatra. Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj explained that the measure was a precautionary step to maintain peace.
The decision to place curtains outside the mosque and mazaar followed recent regional controversies, including disputes over the display of shop nameplates during the Kanwar Yatra. The move stirred significant reactions, with many expressing their displeasure.
Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat condemned the action. "When there are various temples, mosques, and churches along the way, it reflects India's diversity. Are Kanwar Yatris so narrow-minded that they will avoid the shadow of another faith's religious place?" Rawat stated.
People associated with the mosque and mazaar voiced their disapproval. Shakeel Ahmed, associated with the mazaar, said, "The administration put up the curtains without informing us. We have never had problems with Kanwariyas in the past 40 years. We do not understand why this was done now. There has never been an issue here; the devotees come, rest, and leave peacefully."
