Viral Video: On Monday, a big dust storm that brought heavy rainfall and extensive disruption to Mumbai created a terrifying image. The situation tragically changed course when a gas station at the Cheddanagar Junction in Ghatkopar was struck by a billboard that was 100 feet tall.
Rescue Efforts Underway After Deadly Billboard Collapse
At least 4 individuals lost their lives and 64 more were injured in the unlawful billboard crash. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was dispatched to the scene immediately after the disaster to coordinate rescue operations for people buried beneath the debris.
Maharashtra CM Announces Aid for Families of Deceased
Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde said, “Rescuing the people is our priority. Government will take care of the treatment of those who are injured in the incident. Rs 5 lakh will be given to the family of those who have lost their lives. I have directed the concerned authorities to audit for all such hoardings in Mumbai….”
Combined Efforts for Swift Evacuation
Fadnavis took to social media to assure the public that the Mumbai Police, Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Disaster Management Departments were working together to ensure the safe and swift evacuation of those trapped under the collapsed structure.
MMRDA Steps Up to Assist
Without hesitation, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) offered assistance. To help with rescue operations, a committed crew of sixty people—including twenty-five trained labourers with lifting operations experience—was sent from the Metro Line 4 Amar Mahal site. To speed up the rescue operation, the team also brought gas cutters, a 500-metric-ton crane, four Hydra cranes, and other necessary equipment.
Disruptions Caused by Unseasonal Weather
The billboard fall was not the only effect of the unusual weather. The intense rains and dust storm caused Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to halt flying operations for a full hour. Local trains also experienced delays. Following the hoarding collapse, traffic jams were also seen at Pooja Junction (Wadala) North Bound and Motorway Tunnel Trombay South.
