Viral Video: India, known for its diverse and vibrant culture, is a land where languages change every few kilometers. However, a recent viral video has sparked controversy over language and racial abuse. The video shows an Indian girl racially abusing a Bengali family inside a metro lift. She targeted them for not speaking in Hindi. The girl’s actions have ignited a massive debate on social media about the need for respect in a multilingual country like India.
Viral Video Captures Racial Abuse in Metro Lift
The viral video, which has quickly gained attention online, was recorded inside a metro lift. The video shows a verbal spat between a girl and a Bengali family, who were conversing in their native language, Bengali. The girl, appearing irritated, insists that they should speak in Hindi, calling out the family for not using the Hindi language in public.
In the video, the girl is seen telling the Bengali family, “Aap Bangladesh mein nahi ho, you are in India, West Bengal is a part of India, you must be learning Hindi.” She further accuses them, saying, “Aapko Bengali aata hai, Hindi nahi aata India mein rehke.” The girl also makes claims about the metro, stating, “Metro is not yours,” and goes on to assert that “West Bengal is not yours.” Her tone becomes more aggressive as she continues to insist on speaking Hindi, saying, “Aap India mein ho na, Hindu mein baat karo.”
Bengali Family Defends Their Language and Identity
In response to the girl’s racial abuse, the lady in the video, who is speaking Bengali, stands her ground. She calmly retorts, “West Bengal is ours, metro is ours, taxi is ours.” When the girl continues her verbal assault, saying, “Aap Bangladesh se ho,” the lady counters, “How did you say that?” The exchange is heated, with the girl repeating multiple times, “India mein rehke aapko Hindi nahi aata.” The 2-minute-20-second long video has sparked significant backlash online.
Social Media Reactions to the Viral Video
The video was uploaded on the X account titled “Bengali Nationalist” and quickly went viral, with the comment section flooding with reactions. Many users shared their thoughts on the issue of language, highlighting the narrow mindset of imposing Hindi on others. One user wrote, “Only 44% of people in India speak Hindi, yet many of those who do often assume everyone else should as well. It’s a narrow mindset. Personally, I never speak in Hindi in my home state Assam. I only attempt my broken Hindi when I’m in a Hindi-speaking state.”
Another user commented, “Send her to Bangalore once. Arrogance will vaporize.” Others pointed out that the girl’s behavior was wrong, with one stating, “It’s not clear why this Hindi-speaking lady is behaving like this. But if you consider only the video, she’s absolutely wrong. I would never behave like this with a Bengali in West Bengal, a Marathi in Maharashtra, a Gujarati in Gujarat, and so on. I’ll try to find someone to translate and mediate.”
A fourth user expressed concern about increasing divisions in India over language, saying, “Isn’t it we Indians are getting more divided on languages? Let’s respect each other’s language, and if someone can’t speak or understand, help them communicate. Why so many problems are created nowadays in every other state? Let us be human first!!”
The viral video has reignited the ongoing debate over language in India, particularly the tension between Hindi and regional languages. It underscores the importance of respecting linguistic diversity and promoting inclusivity in a multicultural society.
