Viral Video: ‘How Does Human Flesh Taste?’ Indian vlogger Meets Korwai Tribe, Shares Unique Experience

Viral Video: An Indian travel vlogger, Dheeraj Meena, recently embarked on an extraordinary journey deep into the jungles of Indonesia to meet the Korowai tribe, a community often sensationalized as a ‘human-eating’ tribe. Meena documented his experiences with the remote tribe on social media, offering a rare insight into the lives of the Korowai people who have lived in isolation for centuries.

Exploring the Remote Korowai Tribe

Indigenous to the Papua province of Indonesia, the Korowai people are known for their unique lifestyle, which includes living in tree houses and surviving through hunting, gathering, and fishing. Meena shared the challenges of reaching the tribe, which involved a flight, a 10-hour boat journey, and a four-hour trek through dense jungles. “The Korowai live in extremely remote areas, maintaining a traditional lifestyle that includes hunting for survival,” he wrote on Instagram. He added that the tribe adheres to their customs, including wearing minimal clothing and living in gender-segregated houses.

Debunking the Cannibalism Myth

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Korowai tribe is their historical association with cannibalism. During his interactions with tribe members, Meena asked if they still practiced cannibalism. A Korowai man revealed that while cannibalism was part of their spiritual and social beliefs in the past, especially during tribal conflicts, the practice ceased about 16 years ago.

Cannibalism, historically practiced when rival groups clashed, is no longer part of the tribe’s way of life. The man explained that when two groups fought, captives would sometimes be killed and eaten as part of the conflict resolution. However, Meena emphasized that the practice has since faded, and the Korowai people were warm and welcoming during his visit.
