Viral Video: The Supreme Court has intervened following controversial remarks made by Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice V. Srishananda. The video of the Karnataka HC hearing has gone viral. In one incident the judge referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bangalore as “mini Pakistan,” which has led the Supreme Court to seek a formal response from the Karnataka High Court. Additionally, during the same judicial hearing, he made an inappropriate comment to a female lawyer about undergarments, raising further concerns. Senior lawyer Indira Jaising has highlighted this disturbing remark.
Supreme Court Calls for Clarity from Karnataka High Court
A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices Rajiv Khanna, B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, has officially requested a report from the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court regarding these remarks. During the hearing, Chief Justice Chandrachud remarked, “We have taken note of certain comments made by Justice V. Srishananda during a judicial proceeding.” The bench also consulted with the Attorney General and Solicitor General before calling for the report.
“Mini Pakistan” Comment Causes Uproar
In one of two videos that have gone viral, Justice Srishananda can be heard referring to a Muslim-dominated area of Bengaluru as “mini Pakistan.” This comment has drawn widespread criticism, particularly given the potential harm such words could have coming from a judge.
Indira Jaising Highlights Undergarment Remark
Another troubling moment from the hearing involved an inappropriate comment by the judge to a female lawyer. Justice Srishananda remarked that the lawyer knew so much about the “opposition party” that she might even be able to reveal the color of their undergarments. This remark which has gone viral on social media was shared by senior lawyer Indira Jaising, who expressed deep concern over the judge’s behavior.
Chief Justice Calls for Guidelines in the Age of Social Media
In response to these incidents, Chief Justice Chandrachud stressed the importance of maintaining decorum, especially in the current social media age, where every action and word by the judiciary is scrutinized. He suggested to Attorney General R. Venkataramani that basic guidelines could help ensure that judicial conduct remains appropriate.
