The terrible consequences of these platforms were highlighted by a recently circulated viral video in which a young man tragically related how losing 96 lakhs brought him dangerously close to suicide.

The video in question comes from a popular News18 India show, Bhaiyaji Kahin, during which the boy made a heart-wrenching confession. In a live debate, he broke down in tears, sharing that he had lost 96 lakhs through a cricket betting app. The young man revealed that he initially used money meant for his B.Tech education to gamble after watching an advertisement for the app. The addiction grew, and he borrowed money from others, which ultimately spiraled into massive debt.
Impact on Family and Mental Health
In the viral video, the young man expressed that his family no longer wanted to see his face, further deepening his emotional distress. He admitted that, overwhelmed by shame and guilt, he had even attempted suicide. This incident highlights the dark reality of betting apps, where dreams of winning turn into nightmares for countless individuals.
Netizens React to Viral Video
The video was shared by the X account “khurpenchh,” and it has quickly garnered over 115k views. The heartbreaking incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many users in the comment section calling for accountability. One user wrote, “The selfish and morally bankrupt cricketers of the country, who have sacrificed the spirit of sportsmanship for their personal gains, have filled their pockets by openly endorsing betting companies.” Another comment read, “Those making these ads should die of shame… Today, I am very sad to see the condition of this brother.”
Rise in Extreme Measures After Betting Losses
There are other incidents like this one. The number of persons resorting to drastic measures after suffering significant financial losses from online gambling has increased recently. After losing money on internet betting, a Hyderabad-based B.Tech student died by suicide in February 2024. An assistant engineer in Hosadurga, Karnataka, lost 1.5 crore on cricket betting, which tragically caused his wife to commit suicide.
