Viral Video: On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Sudha Murty, the Founder-Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, shared the historical background of this cherished custom on X, the former Twitter platform, in a viral video. She claims that the history of the rakhi customs stems from an actual event that happened in the 16th century between the Mughal emperor Humayun and Rani Karnavati.

Sudha Murty’s Viral Video on Raksha Bandhan Tradition

Sudha Murty’s video gained widespread attention as she explained the significance of Raksha Bandhan. She narrated that the tradition began when Rani Karnavati, a Rajput queen, found herself in a perilous situation. Facing an imminent attack on her small kingdom, she sought help by sending a rakhi, or a sacred thread, to Emperor Humayun, symbolically asking him to protect her as a brother would.

Murty shared, “Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is one of the important festivals where a sister ties a simple thread, indicating that in times of difficulties, you should always be there to help me.” She added that Humayun, upon learning the significance of the rakhi, rushed to Rani Karnavati’s aid but unfortunately arrived too late, as the queen had already passed away.

Mixed Reactions on X

The video quickly went viral, sparking a mix of reactions from users. While some appreciated the sentiment and the historical context provided by Sudha Murty, others were critical. One user commented, “Story of Karnavati-Humayun Rakhi is fiction floated by leftist Marxist historians… no such event ever happened. Rana Sangha’s Queen united Sidodias to fight back.” Another expressed skepticism by stating, “Are the Murtys so poor that they need to make such paid statements? They should stick to 70-hour work week gyaan.”

A third user voiced disappointment, saying, “It’s a real surprise for me that you as a writer are telling this. Raksha Bandhan is related to Krishna & Draupadi. Please educate yourself.”
