China Vs West: Associated Press reports that China’s Ukraine envoy has urged everyone to stop arming countries involved in the Ukraine conflict.
Li Hiu, who serves as China’s ambassador to Kyiv made this remark at a time when Ukraine is trying to recapture its lost territory, Lately, the United States, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Spain have supplied several weapons to Ukraine. These weapons will be used by Ukraine to mount a fresh offensive against Russia.
China-Russia relations
China is one of the few countries that enjoy good relations with Ukraine and Russia. Beijing is perceived by many Western nations to be very close to Moscow.
The United States has threatened that Beijing will face “unspecified consequences” if it supplied arms to Moscow. China is buying large amounts of Russian crude oil and indirectly shoring up Moscow’s foreign exchange reserves. However, Beijing is avoiding doing all those things that may attract Western sanctions.
Health experts say that China will have 65 million Covid-19 infections every week from June. Any sanctions now can impact Beijing’s economy.
While experts are circumspect about China playing a peacemaker in the Russia- Ukraine conflict, they feel that Beijing is trying to expand its diplomatic footprint in Europe.
“China respects the territorial integrity of all nations”
The Chinese ambassador also said his country respects the territorial integrity of all nations. However, Hiu gave no hint that Beijing wants Russia to vacate the annexed Ukrainian territories.
Russia has captured the Crimean peninsula and the eastern part of Ukraine.
Li Hiu also called for a political settlement of the Russia- Ukraine conflict.
He also denounced “outsiders” who are “adding fuel to the fire” and worsening the situation. Some China experts say Hiu was referring to the United States.
