Japan: Associated Press reports that four people were killed in the Nagano province of Japan in a rare violent incident. Two of the dead were policemen.The police later arrested the suspect who was shown on television with his hands raised. So far, there is no official information about the identity of the accused.However, one woman who escaped the suspect’s custody told the media that the suspect was her son and his father was the chairman of the local assembly. The police haven’t confirmed this woman’s information.
Incidents like these are rare in Japan which has stiff gun control laws.
A witness told state-run NHK television that he saw the suspect chase a woman and stab her when she killed fell down. He then attacked two policemen who arrived to overpower the assailant.
The witness asked the suspect why he attacked the woman. The assailant told the witness he wanted to kill her.
Two policemen and the rescued woman were pronounced dead at the hospital. Another wounded woman, who couldn’t be rescued because she was near the suspect, later died while being brought to the hospital.

According to Wikipedia, there were 1.3 robberies and 1.1 million murders per 100,000 people in Japan in 1989. In the same year, Japanese police claimed to solve 75.9% of robberies and 95.9% of murders.Per 2013 UNODC statistics, the country’s rate of intentional homicide per 100,000 was 0.3 and was among the lowest in the world. UNODC stands for United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime.
