Imran Khan: The Punjab Police have rearrested Shah Mahmood Qureishi, a key aide of Imran Khan, just minutes after his release on May 22. Qureishi was earlier jailed for inciting attacks on Pakistani government buildings, including army establishments. On May 9, the Punjab Police arrested Imran Khan on charges of corruption. Soon after Khan’s arrest, his party workers went on a rampage and attacked several government buildings.
The Islamabad High Court had ordered Qureishi’s release after terming his arrest illegal, but moments after the ex-Foreign Minister came out of jail, he was rearrested by the Punjab Police. Shah Mahmud Qureishi is the vice-chairman of Pakistan Tehreeq-e-Insaf (PTI) of which Imran is the chairman. The police have charged Qureishi with rioting in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
PTI in turmoil
According to press reports, several PTI leaders, including Shireen Mazari, have quit the party in recent days. Mazari served as a minister in Imran Khan’s government between 2018 and 2022. Some political experts think Qureishi has also left the PTI. However, the former minister has declared he is very much in the party.
Imran Khan has been vigorously opposing the role of the Pakistan Army in the country’s politics. Last year, Khan had to quit as PM after the Army ‘withdrew’ its support. Since then, Khan’s political foes and the Army have been putting pressure on Khan in various ways. Some experts expect PTI to dissolve in the next few years.
No respite for Pakistan
There has been no respite for Pakistan on the economic front either. Islamabad has been requesting a bailout from the IMF, but there’s been little progress so far. The widespread clashes following Imran Khan’s arrest have complicated matters even further. Furthermore, the Pakistani Rupee has declined more than 20% against the US Dollar, leading to a steep rise in inflation.
