Iran: On Saturday, protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, erupted in western Iran, and Iranian women were seen publicly removing their hijabs. Amini was detained by Iran’s “Morality Police” for “improperly” donning the hijab because she had not completely covered her hair. She was taken into custody by the “Morality Police,” assaulted in the police van as she was being sent to a detention facility for a “re-education class,” and then released.
Social Media Outrage
On social media, a number of videos from the rallies that depict demonstrators chanting anti-government chants as they assemble in Mahsa Amini’s hometown of Saqqez to mourn the 22-year-old who passed away in a Tehran hospital have gone viral.

“Women of Iran-Saghez removed their headscarves in protest against the murder of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old lady, by hijab police,” said Masih Alinejad, an Iranian journalist and activist, along with a video. They were yelling, “Death to dictator! In Iran, taking off the headscarf is a crime. We enjoin men and women everywhere to demonstrate unity.
Masih Alinejad also tweeted, “This is the true Iran, Security forces in Saqqez, Iran, opened fire on peaceful demonstrators after #Mahsa Amini’s burial. Many demonstrators have suffered injuries. Hijab police have already killed a 22-year-old girl, and they are now shooting and using tear gas on mourners.
Several ladies took off their headscarves as the mob shouted, “Death to the tyrant,” referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Sanandaj, the regional capital, too had protests that continued well into the night. On social media, a chorus of people screamed, “Saqez is not alone; it is supported by Sanandaj.”

The victim’s brother, Kairash, said that the police van blocked his sister’s way and kidnapped her. When he was able to free himself, they told him that Mahsa would be transported to the station and released following an hour-long “re-education lesson.”
