Oath Keepers: Associated Press has reported that Steward Rhodes, founder of Oath Keepers, has received an 18-year prison term for planning and orchestrating an attack on the US Capitol. The attack followed the defeat of Donald Trump in the 2020 Presidential elections.
Rhodes is the first person to have been convicted and jailed for this act of ‘terrorism’.
Judge Amit Mehta, who handed over the sentence to Stewart Rhodes said,” You are smart, you are charismatic and compelling and frankly that’s what makes you dangerous.” Mehta said all these reasons are strong enough to keep Rhodes in jail.
American law permits convicts to apologize for their acts and appeal for leniency. Rhodes didn’t exercise this option but said he was a political prisoner and ‘like President Trump my only crime is opposing those who are destroying our country,”
The judge shot back saying Rhodes wasn’t a political prisoner and he was being punished not for his beliefs but what the Oath Keepers founder did.
What is Oath Keepers?
Wikipedia describes Oath Keepers as an anti-government body with far-right beliefs. The Encyclopedia of Politics: Left and Right defines a far-right individual as someone who holds extreme nationalistic views and is xenophobic and racist. Xenophobes hate foreigners and mount violent actions against migrants.
Research on Oath Keepers reveals that this group encourages its members to indulge in actions that are against the US Government and the Constitution. Two-thirds of Oath Keepers are former members of the US military.
Steward Rhodes founded Oath Keepers in 2009 and is a former paratrooper and law graduate.
Transfer of Power
Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential elections but Donald Trump believes those polls were flawed and rigged. According to The Guardian, nearly 40% of Americans still do not believe that Joe Biden became President legitimately.
