The FATF (Financial Action Task Force), which monitors the terrorist funding, will take an important decision regarding Pakistan today. After observing the efforts of Pakistan for terror financing and prevention of money laundering, the institution will tell whether Pakistan will remain in the gray list or black list. However, it is believed that Pakistan will remain in the gray list for the time being. While the Pakistani government is constantly hoping to come out of the gray list.
Pakistan has incurred a loss of about $ 38 billion (Rs 27,52,76,18,00,000) due to being included in the FATF gray list. In 2008, Pakistan was put on the gray list by this global agency that looked into the financial support of terrorism. Since then Pakistan has been trying to get out of this list till date. In Pakistan, different rulers who have been in power since 2008 have claimed in front of their people every time that their country has not suffered any loss due to the gray list of FATF. But, this report by an independent thinktank of Pakistan has kept the air of government claims out.
FATF put Pakistan on its ‘gray’ list in June 2018 and asked it to curb money laundering and terrorist financing activities by the end of 2019, but the deadline was extended due to COVID-19 (COVID 19) was. The FATF is also finishing a three-day virtual meeting on Thursday after its multiple rounds of meetings starting on February 11. Some of these meetings have taken note of the reports that Pakistan had submitted regarding the FATF 27 Point Action Plan (FATF) of Pakistan.
Even today Pakistan’s exit from gray list is difficult
An independent think-tank named Islamabad-based Tadlab claimed in its research paper that Pakistan had to pay the price for global politics. Pakistan’s big economist and the chief of this think tank, Dr. Nafi Sardar, said that even today, the FATF meeting, which ends in Paris on Thursday, is unlikely to be out of the gray list of Pakistan.
After the consultation over Pakistan, the President of the organization gave information about the performance of all the countries of the world. According to the Pakistani media, on the basis of this, Pakistan has improved only two out of 40 standards of FATF. It has also been said in media reports that any decision on Pakistan will be taken on the basis of the 27 point action plan stated by the FATF.
In this case, The Dawn newspaper quoted Pakistani diplomats as saying that because of China, Turkey and Malaysia, they could not be blacklisted. To stop this, these three countries will give full force, but will not let this happen. These diplomats also say that these countries will not only do this because they are friendly nations of Pakistan but also because Pakistan has worked for the prevention of terrorism. According to them, Pakistan has acted on 21 of the 27 fixed standards of FATF.
