According to police, a 6-year-old boy shot and wounded a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, in the east of the United States, on Friday. Though the 30-year-old women is thought to have suffered fatal injuries, police claimed her condition has significantly improved while being treated at the hospital.

As per Police Chief Steve Drew, the shooting was not an accident. Fortunately, no other student was hurt during the shooting at the elementary school, and for their safety, they were taken to a gymnasium. However, the concerned local officials swore to investigate the incident and make sure it doesn’t happen again.
The police chief claimed that the altercation that led to the shooting occurred in the first-grade classroom. However, there was no additional information to explain how a 6-year-old got the weapon. According to Steve Drew, “I want to know where that firearm came from.”

School superintendent George Parker expressed his surprise and discouragement at the dismissal. He further apprised that community support was needed to make sure that guns are not available to the youth and lamented the educators inability to keep guns out of school.
All school campuses are outfitted with metal detectors, according to Parker, but they were not used at Richneck Elementary on Friday.
School shootings plague the United States
In the US, school shootings are a frequent occurrence, with recent tragedies including one recent tragedy involved an 18-year-old gunman who killed 19 children and two instructors in Uvalde, Texas, last May. The shooting deaths of 10 people in a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and 21 people at a school in Uvalde, Texas, were two high-profile incidents of gun violence that occurred across the US last year.
According to reports, there may have been 44,000 gun-related fatalities in the US in 2016. According to the Gun Violence Archive database, half of them involved suicide while the other half involved murder, accidents, and self-defense.
