According to government figures, seven out of every ten foreign-origin prisoners lodged in Indian jails by the end of 2020 were under trial, of whom nearly half were from Bangladesh alone.
According to the recently released National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)’s Prison Statistics India 2020 report, a total of 4,926 foreign prisoners were present in Indian jails in 2020 as compared to 5,157 in 2018 and 5,203 in 2019. The NCRB, which works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, said that at the end of 2020, the number of Indian prisoners imprisoned in jails across the country was 4.83 lakh.
According to the report, out of the total 4,926 foreign prisoners present at the end of 2020, 4,135 were men and 791 were women. Of these prisoners, 23.1 per cent (1,140 prisoners) had been convicted, while 70.4 per cent (3,467 prisoners) were under trial and 0.8 per cent (41 prisoners) were kept in custody.
