Russia-Ukraine War: Russia is developing a new city in Mariupol, where the war killed hundreds of lives, months after the port city of Ukraine collapsed in May. According to an investigation by the Associated Press, at least one European company is providing materials for the construction of a new Russian city on the rubble of Mariupol.
At least one bombed-out structure is being demolished daily throughout the city by Russian labourers, who are also carrying away the debris and dismembered bodies. With the replacement of the tens of thousands of Ukrainians who have died or departed, the once-thriving metropolis is on its way to becoming a garrison city, with Russian soldiers, constructors, administrators, and medics.
As street names are changed to Soviet ones and the enormous sign that proclaims the city’s name has been repainted with the Russian flag’s red, white, and blue as well as the Russian spelling, Russia is removing all signs of the city’s Ukrainian history. The street through Mariupol known as the Avenue of Peace will soon be known as Lenin Avenue.
The few open schools follow a Russian curriculum, phone and television networks have switched to Russian, the Ukrainian money is disappearing, and Mariupol is now in the Moscow time zone, according to AP.

Construction of a City of Death
Since Russian tanks entered Ukraine on February 24, Mariupol has been a major target for the Russians because of its strategic location as a port on the Sea of Azov and a key stop for Russian supply lines.
The city took the brunt of constant airstrikes and artillery fire, and the people there had their access to food, water, and communications cut off.
Mariupol, however, did not give up easy. The city had come to represent Ukrainian resistance by the time the last fighters gave up in May, 86 days after they started fighting.
Resistance cost a lot since Russian forces made sure the city was completely destroyed. Fire-blackened walls, grey demolition dust, and dead trees with shredded leaves are visible in videos captured by AP throughout the city and on satellite photographs.

The greatest loss is the loss of human life
However, the greatest loss is the loss of human life. According to the AP’s analysis, there are at least 10,300 additional graves spread across Mariupol, and it’s possible that thousands more remains were never ever transported to the cemetery.
When the city eventually fell in May, the municipal administration in exile calculated that a minimum of 25,000 people had perished. However, based on interactions with personnel recording the body collection from the streets for the Russian occupation authority, at least three people in the city since June claim that the number of slain is at least triple that or more.
