Aeromexico: One of David Tellez’s small children recognised the military plane as an assault plane when it touched down next to their Aeromexico passenger airliner early on Thursday.
Then the shooting started.
After the incident in the northern city of Culiacan, Tellez said, “As we were accelerating for take-off, we heard gunshots very close to the plane, and that’s when we all threw ourselves to the floor.”
Following the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, the son of infamous drug lord El Chapo and a key member of the Sinaloa cartel, fighting broke out in Culiacan on Thursday.

According to Aeromexico, no one was wounded on Tellez’s flight.
Shortly after, the Culiacan airport was forced to close as security personnel combed the city, which was littered with burned-out cars in an effort to quell the unrest.
After celebrating Christmas with his family, Tellez, 42, was travelling with his wife and their three young children (ages 7, 4, and 1).
He told Reuters that despite meeting road blockades put in place as a result of nighttime shootouts, he had arrived at the airport for his 8:24 a.m. departure without incident. Despite the fact that Guzman’s arrest had not yet been officially announced, anxious security officers urged visitors to come right away.
He added over the phone that “authorities were not saying anything.”
Tellez and his family hid in an airport restroom when they learned that there were gang members present. The story was untrue, so the Aeromexico passengers boarded right away.
But as the AM165 flight to Mexico City was set to take off, a string of military aircraft began to land on the airstrip.
Tellez pulled out his cellphone and started filming multiple videos, which include two enormous air force transport planes, smaller attack aircraft that resemble fighter jets, and military trucks parked on the tarmac. Then, distant gunshots started to resound.
A toddler was seen sobbing in a social media video that appeared to show the same incident with passengers huddling down beneath their seats.
An airline employee said that an engine hit had caused a leak. Passengers were told to disembark, and they were then taken to an airport waiting area without any windows.
It’s unclear who was being shot at.
On Friday, Tellez’s family will take another flight, but for the time being they will remain in place.
We prefer to wait till it is secure to depart from the airport, he said. “The city is worse. There is a lot of shooting and confusion.”
