Africa: 14, attending funerals in the capital of Cameroon killed by a landslide

Africa: At least 14 people who were attending a funeral were murdered in a landslide on Sunday in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, according to the region’s governor.

The governor of Cameroon’s Centre area told the media:

Naseri Paul Bea, the governor of Cameroon’s Centre area, spoke to the media at the scene and said, “We are carrying the corpses to the mortuary of the central hospital, while the search for other people, or corpses, is still ongoing”.

How did the event unfold?

At the base of a 20-meter-high earth embankment, dozens of people were attending a burial on a soccer field when the embankment fell on top of them, according to witnesses who spoke sources.

With its several steep, shack-lined slopes, Yaounde is one of the wettest towns in all of Africa. This year, numerous severe floods across the nation were brought on by heavy rainfall, crippling infrastructure and displacing thousands.
