North Korea has fired two more ballistic missiles off its east coast and has warned the US of halting military drills and further issued a dire threat that it will turn the Pacific into a “firing range”.
Ballistic Missile launches have come just two days after North Korea fired an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) into the sea off Japan’s west coast, instigating the United States to conduct air exercises with South Korea and separately with Japan.
North Korea fires two ballistic missiles of its east coast
State Media of North Korea had confirmed that it fired two projectiles from multiple rocket launchers and reached their targets away at 395 km (245 miles) and 337 km (209 miles)
State News Agency KCNA stated,
“The 600mm multiple rocket launcher mobilised in the firing… is a means of tactical nuclear weapon,” capable of “paralysing” an enemy airfield”
Japan’s Defense Ministry also informed that the two missiles, launched around 2200 GMT, reached a maximum altitude of about 100 km and 50 km, fell outside Japan’s EEZ.
Alarm Bells in Japan
There are alarm bells rising in Japan in the aftermath of missile launches by North Korea and alarmed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has requested for an emergency U.N Security Council meeting over the tests.
However the prospects for fresh UN sanctions against North Korea appears slim for the time being on account of Veto power held by Russia and China. Further there are also cold vibes between the Western world and Russia over Ukraine crisis and China is also in a belligerent and agitational mood on account of Chinese Balloons which were spotted on the American skies.
In the meantime, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff has strongly condemned missile launch as “grave provocation” which needs to be ceased immediately.
Also South Korea’s foreign Ministry announced sanctions on four individuals and five entities linked to North Korea’s weapons programs over latest ICBM land missile tests, which it has termed as fastest ever such response to the North’s provocations.
“Our government has made it clear that North Korea’s provocations will definitely come at a price. Its repeated provocations will result in strengthening South Korea-U.S. deterrence and tightening the global sanctions network,”
