Iran is still on fire executing all and sundry who the theocratic government considers as its enemy. The countrywide protests against the government’s archaic dress-code promulgation are still unabated, thousands have laid their lives, few more thousands are languishing behind the bar, but the obstinate rulers are in no mood to relent or negotiate with the dissenters. Meanwhile, another execution order was pronounced – A former Deputy Defence Minister was awarded a death sentence after convicting him on charges of spying for Britain, state-linked media reported on Wednesday. Have the dictator government gone insane? Where such whimsical acts of executions will lead to? Perhaps a complete failure of ‘Law and Order’ by the protectors of Law.
- The judiciary claimed that the former Deputy Defence Minister Ali Reza Akbari was a “key spy” for British intelligence.
- Britain urged Iran to release Ali Reza Akbari on Wednesday.
The Iranian Judiciary declared that Ali Reza Akbari, who was Deputy Defence Minister until 2001, was actually a “key spy” for British intelligence. The Judiciary further stated that Iranian intelligence unmasked the spying by feeding him false information.
Ali Reza alleged to have divulged nuclear discussion inputs
It is alleged that Ali Reza had spied on past nuclear discussions between Iran and Western powers. Akbari served as Deputy Defense Minister under President Mohammad Khatami, a reformist who had pushed for improved relations with the West.
Meanwhile, Britain has urged Iran to release Ali Reza Akbari on Wednesday.
“We are supporting the family of Mr Akbari and have repeatedly raised his case with the Iranian authorities,” a British foreign office spokesperson said in a statement.
“Our priority is securing his immediate release and we have reiterated our request for urgent consular access.”

For several years, Iran has been enmeshed in a camouflaged war with the United States and Israel, marked by covert attacks on its disputed nuclear program. The killing of Iran’s top nuclear scientist in 2020, which Iran blamed on Israel, indicated foreign intelligence services had made major inroads.
Akbari, who ran a private think tank, has not been seen in public since 2019 when he was arrested.
Authorities have not released any details about his trial. Those accused of espionage and other crimes related to national security are usually tried behind closed doors, where the accused is denied any legal assistance and not allowed to see the evidence against them.
As it was apparent the Supreme Court of Iran upheld his sentence and refused to provide any attorney. There was no word on when the execution might be carried out.
Akbari was one who was instrumental in ending the 8-year war with Iraq
Akbari had the distinction of implementing of the 1988 cease-fire between Iran and Iraq following their devastating eight-year war while working closely with UN observers.
