New Zealand Earthquake: A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 hit New Zealand’s Wellington. The centre of the quake has been reported at the north west of Paraparaumu, located a moderately shallow depth of 57.4 km. According to GeoNet, over 3,000 people felt the earthquake.
New Zealand hit by earthquake of 6.1 magnitude
“A big shake there! A magnitude 6.0, 57 km deep, 50 km north-west of Paraparaumu was widely felt in the North Island,” said New Zealand’s Civil Defence agency.
Til the writing of this report, no casualties were reported. There has been no damage and no Tsunami warnings have been issued. However, residents felt strong tremors for 10-20 seconds.
“It is already a really stressful time for people — look after yourself and the people around you,” added the civil defence agency.
New Zealand hit by cyclone Gabrielle
The earthquake struck the country at a time when it is already battling with Cyclone Gabrielle, causing flooding, landsliding and high winds. The cyclone that left three people dead has now weakened, leaving the government to assess the damages.
Gabrielle reached the country on Sunday before hitting down to the east cost. Residents of the hard-hit areas have been asked to preserve food and water to battle scarcity.
Much to the relief of localite, the weather has now begun to clear.
