Russian state security forces raided the house of former state TV journalist Marina Ovsyannikova on Wednesday. In March, the journalist made statements denouncing the invasion of Ukraine during a live news bulletin on television.
She made captured international attention in March, holding a protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine during a live broadcast on state-controlled Channel 1 news.
This past Thursday, a Moscow court fined Ms. Ovsyannikova 50,000 roubles ($800) over her comments about the war.
Russia passed a law against “discrediting” its armed forces in early March, shortly after it invaded Ukraine. Ovsyannikova said that a criminal case had been opened against her under Russia’s law criminalising the spreading of “fake” information about the Russian army.
The TV journalist has since been arrested and fined for her persistent opposition to Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine several times.
“What’s going on here is absurd,” she told the court. “War is horror, blood, and shame.”
Ms. Ovsyannikova found herself in hot waters, accused of breaking the law when she wrote on social media that those responsible for the war would find themselves in the dock before an international tribunal.
