According to an indicative for the local governor, a triple suicide bombing early on Saturday morning (April 22) in Sevare, central Mali, resulted in at least nine deaths and more than 60 injuries.
According to a report by AFP, which included local and the military from the nation, the offensive lasted for about three hours before the Malian military was able to retake the region.
More details about the attack
Yacouba Maiga, the spokesperson, confirmed by phone to Reuters that all those killed and hurt in Saturday’s explosions were civilians. No one or any group has so far taken responsibility of the attack. According to local and military officials, the attack in Sevare, Mopti district, lasted from 5:30 am to roughly 8:00 am.
Four huge explosions were heard, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to AFP, and were followed by automatic weapon fire and smoke near the airport. When Colonel Major Abass Dembele, the governor of the Mopti district, visited the scene following the attack, he described it as a “car bomb attack” that was directed towards an air base in Sevare.
“He first visited the wounded admitted to the Somine Dolo hospital before going to the…airport area where the vehicle bomb packed with explosives exploded without reaching its target,” said a statement, as per AFP. The governor also praised the locals who were “strongly mobilised” to give blood to the injured, it was noted.
Additionally, earlier on Saturday, according to Reuters, the government of Mali said on national television that “a terrorist attack” had been thwarted in Sevare by the army, adding that “three vehicles filled with explosives were destroyed by army drone fire.”
Similarly, a Malian military official who spoke to AFP under the condition of anonymity described the incident as a “terrorist” attack. Additionally, this occurs two days after the murder of the interim president of Mali’s chief of staff and three other people.
