The African country Congo is facing devastating floods. The capital city of DR Congo, Kinshasa has seen the worst floods in the last few years. More than 120 people have been reported killed in the capital Kinshasa due to the flood. Heavy rains lashed Kinshasa overnight causing many roads in the city to sink. Landslides have been reported at many places in the city. About 15 million people live in Kinshasa, the capital of DR Congo.
How worried the common people will be due to floods in Congo can only be estimated from the fact that the Gombe district of the capital Kinshasa has been submerged. There are a large number of government buildings in this district. In view of this disaster caused by heavy rains, Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama has announced three days of national mourning in the country. Rescue and search operation is going on in the city.
Three big updates related to floods in DR Congo
Kinshasa city police chief Gen. Silvano Kasongo told AFP that most of the dead were residents of mountainous areas. There have been incidents of landslides here.
A major landslide occurred in the mountainous district of Mont-Ngafula, cutting off a major supply route linking the capital to Matadi.
This route connects the city to an important port on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
The city of Kinshasa, situated on the banks of the Congo River, has seen a huge population increase in recent years.
Earlier in November 2019, 40 people were killed in Kinshasa due to floods. Even then Mont-Ngafula was one of the most affected areas.
