Florida: A ‘trusted’ babysitter who kidnapped two toddlers from their Florida home has been arrested. She and her boyfriend took the toddlers in their mother’s car and drove 1,000 miles to Wisconsin where they left the children in a park.
Both toddlers, aged 1 and 2, were unharmed.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office in northwest Florida issued a statement that Adalyn Jean Burkett, 18 and Marquan Edwards, 22 have been arrested.
According to the sheriff’s office, the duo took the toddlers on a cross-country hike from Panama City on June 23 and 24. Less than 48 hours later, police closed in on Burkett and Edwards, who left the children in a Milwaukee park. The police say the babysitter and her friend were scared that they were being tracked.
MSN says Florida’s Department of law enforcement issued a missing child alert for both toddlers. The news was disseminated throughout the country using tv, radio and newspapers. On Sunday, both children were reunited with their parents even as policemen tracked Burkett and Edwards.
“On the road”
Tina Leach, the children’s grandmother said her family has been on the road for more than 17 hours. Leach told, “We drove 17 hours to reach here (Milwaukee), and we would have walked if we had to.”
The mother of the toddlers told the media that she trusted Burkett as a babysitter. Mrs Leach told a news channel, “We never thought she would have done something like that. We trusted her.”
Burkett was a runaway child
MSN says the alleged kidnapper Adalyn Jean Burkett went missing from her home in 2020. She was 15 then, according to the Marathon County Sheriff’s office.
“Fifteen-year-old Adalyn Burkett has been missing from her home in the Town of Mosinee since May 20, 2020,” the Sheriff’s office wrote in a Facebook post.
