Bangladesh Unrest: There have finally been major changes in Bangladesh after months of violent protests. Resigning from her role as prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League leader and daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first prime minister of Bangladesh, fled the nation.
In an effort to provide stability to the country, the military has seized control of Bangladesh and declared the creation of an interim administration. Sheikh Hasina’s concerns may grow as a result of the worldwide responses to this coup, with numerous nations voicing their opinions. Other Western countries like the United States, Germany, and Great Britain have praised the interim government in Bangladesh while indirectly criticising Sheikh Hasina’s former government as being oppressive.
Global Reactions to the Coup in Bangladesh
Responses to the coup in Bangladesh have come from all across the world. Spokesperson for the US State Department Matthew Miller said, “We have seen the announcement that Prime Minister Hasina has resigned from her position and departed Bangladesh. We are monitoring the situation carefully. The United States stands with the people of Bangladesh. We urge all parties to refrain from further violence. Too many lives have been lost over the past several weeks, and we urge calm and restraint in the days ahead. We welcome the announcement of the interim government and urge any transition be conducted in accordance with Bangladesh’s laws. We are deeply saddened about the reports of Human Rights abuses, casualties and injuries over the weekend in the past weeks…”
The UK government also responded to the coup. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said, “The unprecedented violence in the country leading to the loss of lives is tragic. All parties now need to end the violence, restore peace, and work together to de-escalate the situation.”
Germany’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson highlighted the importance of Bangladesh continuing on its democratic path amid the unrest. This statement has been seen as a strong criticism of Sheikh Hasina’s previous government.
Through spokesperson Josep Borrell, the European Union (EU) expressed its worry over the situation in Bangladesh. In its demand for “peace and restraint,” the EU emphasised how important it is that Bangladesh ensure a peaceful and orderly handover of power while upholding the fundamentals of democracy.
Will Sheikh Hasina’s Worries Increase?
Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India after the coup. Her worries can grow as numerous nations quietly criticise her leadership and oppressive measures. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other national parties, with the exception of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, would provide their assent and participate in the formation of the interim administration, the military has stated clearly. Sheikh Hasina’s future is shadowed by this situation, which could make her more anxious.
