The 44th president was greeted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden on Wednesday in the East Room for the unveiling of the Obamas’ official portraits. The portraits of the Obamas, which were previously unveiled and widely praised, were made in 2018 for the National Portrait Gallery by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald.
These paintings, which were commissioned by the White House Historical Society and will remain on display at the White House, adopt a more straightforward approach while still managing to give the genre a contemporary spin.
Sharon Sprung painted Michelle Obama’s portrait, while Robert McCurdy painted the president’s.

Ceremony on Wednesday in the East Room marked a rare occasion for a celebration among two presidential administrations, where current President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden convened a who’s who of administration officials past and present — from the unique vantage point of having served in both.
“Barack and Michelle, welcome home,” Mr. Biden told the Obamas Wednesday. “Welcome home.”
“It is great to be back,” Obama said after their portraits were unveiled. “Thank you so much for your hospitality. Thanks for letting us invite a few friends to the White House. We will try not to tear up the place.”
Mr. Biden lauded his former boss, telling him that “nothing could have prepared me better or more to become president of the United States than being at your side for eight years, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.”
