Elon Musk: Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk’s suggestion to defuse tensions between China and Taiwan has highlighted the lines of conflict between the two neighbours, far from serving as a peacemaker.
While China has warmly embraced Musk’s offer to “work out a special administrative zone for Taiwan that is relatively presentable,” Taipei has vehemently rejected it.
Musk has been praised by Beijing’s ambassador to the US, Qin Gang, for his efforts to promote peace while promoting the idea that Taiwan would be given “a high degree of autonomy” following China’s reunification. I would want to applaud @elonmusk for his plea for peace across the Taiwan Strait and for his concept of creating a special administrative zone for Taiwan, the man wrote in a tweet.
“Actually, Peaceful reunification and One Country, Two Systems are our essential ideas for settling the Taiwan question and the best strategy to realise national reunification,” the ambassador continued.
The Tesla CEO, on the other hand, came under fire from Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to Washington, Hsiao Bi-khim, for suggesting that Taipei hand over some authority to Beijing, claiming that “freedom and democracy are not for sale” in his nation.
In a tweet, Hsiao stated that “Taiwan sells many products, but our freedom and democracy are not for sale. Any lasting proposal for our future must be determined peacefully, free from coercion, and respectful of the democratic wishes of the people of Taiwan.”
Ma Ying-jeou, a former president of Taiwan, also disagreed with the comments made by the businessman, saying, “According to Musk, “one country, two systems” I can’t agree with this.”

WHAT DIDN’T MUSK SUGGEST?
Musk argued that tensions between China and Taiwan could be handled by ceding partial control of Taiwan to Beijing days after floating a possible agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war that garnered criticism from Ukrainian politicians.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Musk said, “My proposal would be to work out a special administrative zone for Taiwan that is pretty palatable, probably won’t make everyone happy.
HOW COME TAIWAN AND CHINA ARE AT ODDS?
Beijing has long promised to subjugate the island nation and hasn’t ruled out using force to do it. Beijing claims that democratically run Taiwan is one of its provinces. The government of Taiwan vehemently rejects China’s claims to sovereignty and maintains that only the 23 million residents of the island can decide its future.
All of Taiwan’s major political parties have rejected China’s “one nation, two systems” model of autonomy, which is identical to that of Hong Kong.
