Joe Biden: On Sunday, the US expressed alarm over the incarceration of journalist Evan Gershkovich, a citizen of the US, and demanded his immediate release. Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who is a citizen of the United States, was detained in Russia on Thursday last week on suspicion of espionage, according to Russia’s top security agency.
Antony Blinken voiced his worry over Gershkovich’s incarceration
“It has been established that E. Gershkovich, acting on an assignment from the American side, was gathering information classified as a state secret about the activity of one of the enterprises of Russia’s military-industrial complex,” said Russia’s FSB security service, quoted by Reuters. In a phone call with Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, US Secretary Antony Blinken voiced his worry over Gershkovich’s incarceration. “Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken had a conversation today. Secretary Blinken expressed the United States’ strong concern with the unjustifiable arrest of a journalist who is a US citizen by Russia. If Gershkovich is found guilty of spying, he may spend roughly 20 years behind bars. When questioned about his message to Russia regarding the detention of Gershkovich, Biden responded, “Let him go,” according to reports.
