Jersey: On Jersey’s Channel Island, an explosion and fire in an apartment building resulted in at least three fatalities and dozens unaccounted for, according to authorities on Saturday.
Following the explosion in the village of St. Helier, “about a dozen” residents were reported missing, according to States of Jersey Police Chief Robin Smith.
About Jersey
The largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey, is a self-governing British territory in the English Channel, off the coast of northern France.
According to Smith, a three-story structure “totally collapsed,” and another building close by had also sustained damage. He called the sight “devastating” and issued a caution that there might be other fatalities.
Locals reported smelling gas
According to Smith, the area had received a call from the fire department the previous evening after locals reported smelling gas.
He indicated that if there was a safety concern with natural gas lines, police would look into it.
While the fire was put out, emergency response agencies were still working hard at the scene, according to the police.
Authorities warned Jersey residents to stay away from the cordoned-off blast area and to only seek emergency hospital care in the event of a true medical emergency.
