Boris Johnson’s exit means something for Indian-origin contenders and for India

Boris Johnson resigned as prime minister of Great Britain on July 7. Is it possible that a minister with Indian ancestry will succeed him as prime minister?

Many ongoing agreements and talks will be in limbo as a result of the political turmoil in the UK. Consider the government to be in lame-duck mode until the party chooses a new leadership to lead the nation, with Boris Johnson reduced to the role of caretaker Prime Minister. All policy choices will be put on hold until that time.

In front of No. 10 Downing Street on Thursday, Johnson declared: “It is plainly the will of the parliamentary Conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party, and thus a new prime minister.”

The party’s intention. That is the key element. not the opposition benches or the will of the people. His own party removed Boris Johnson.
So, the very same party will set the timeline and the process for a Tory leadership race which will be announced next week.

Is Britain ready for a non-Christian of Indian descent?
Former finance secretary Rishi Sunak, foreign secretary Liz Truss, and even home secretary Priti Patel are currently the front-runners for the role of prime minister.

But is the UK ready to embrace a leader who is non-Christian, of a different ethnicity, and of colour? The nation does have the chance to show itself as one that forges ahead beyond the limitations of the past and follows a different course.
It’s advantageous that a string of resignations against Boris Johnson followed this 42-year-old politician of Indian descent’s resignation from his position as Chancellor of the Exchequer. By resigning after Johnson issued an apology for appointing senior Conservative MP Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip in February despite allegations of sexual assault against him, he was setting an example for others to follow. Following charges of drunkenly touching two men, Pincher was forced to resign.

Soon after Downing Street acknowledged that the Prime Minister was aware of Pincher’s actions as early as 2019, Sunak promptly announced his resignation.

At a time when the nation is struggling to recover financially from the COVID-19 pandemic, Sunak’s acute financial acumen, in addition to his higher moral standing, serves as an additional advantage.

But there is also a lot of dispute about his time in the Johnson administration. To begin with, he was fined alongside Boris Johnson for attending a birthday party at 10 Downing Street and was connected to the “partygate” incident.

In addition, in response to a query regarding how Boris Johnson’s resignation may affect the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) agreement between the two nations, Bagchi stated that India and the UK are still in the midst of FTA negotiations and that India wants to sign the agreement soon.

“There is some hope that it will be finished shortly. We are speculating as to how Boris Johnson’s resignation may affect the agreement, but India expects to maintain the positive momentum in the ongoing negotiations,” he continued.
