Brazil: Supporters of former Brazilian far-right president Jair Bolsonaro have stormed the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential residence in the nation’s capital, Brasilia, refusing to accept his electoral defeat.

Videos posted to social media on Sunday showed Bolsonaro supporters damaging furniture and windows in the National Congress and Supreme Court structures. They ascended to the roof of the Congress building, which houses Brazil’s Senate and Chamber of Deputies, and spread out a banner that read “intervention” and appeared to be a plea to the country’s military.
A week has passed since the inauguration of Bolsonaro’s socialist challenger, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the little more than three-hour long siege.
In an effort to disperse the protesters, security personnel deployed tear gas; according to local media, there were 3,000 persons participating in the event.

Bolsonaro has spread the untrue notion that Brazil’s electronic voting system was prone to fraud, which has fueled protests against Lula’s victory. Bolsonaro has yet to admit loss in the election of October 30 and is presently in the US state of Florida.
Supporters have congregated outside military facilities, barricaded highways, burned down vehicles, and demanded that the military step in.
