Sana Ramchand Gulwani, a 27-year-old woman from Pakistan’s Hindu community, has made history by becoming the first woman from her community to be appointed as the assistant commissioner and administrator in Punjab province’s Hassanabdal. She graduated as a doctor, fulfilling her parents’ wishes, before enrolling in the Federal Public Service Commission. After clearing the Central Superior Services (CSS) exam on her first attempt, she joined the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) in 2020.
Gulwani’s Impressive Academic and Professional Career
In 2016, Gulwani graduated as a urologist from Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University and began preparing for the CSS exam. She assumed her role as the assistant commissioner and administrator of Hassanabdal city in the Attock district in the past week. Although she is unsure if she is the first woman from her community to appear for the CSS exam, she has never heard of anyone else doing so.
Historic Moment for Pakistan’s Hindu Community
Pakistan’s Hindu community is its largest minority community, with an estimated 7.5 million Hindus residing in the country. Most of them are settled in Sindh province, where they share language, culture, and traditions with Muslim residents. Gulwani’s appointment is a historic moment for her community, paving the way for other members to follow in her footsteps and break down barriers.
