BRICS Summit: A brief interaction took place between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday outside the 15th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) leaders’ press conference.
Before they took the platform together, PM Modi and the Chinese President can be seen strolling hand in hand in a video released by a news agency. The brief conversation takes place in the shadow of rumours of a one-on-one encounter between Xi Jinping and PM Modi during the BRICS Summit.
Tuesday marked PM Modi’s arrival in South Africa for the 15th BRICS Summit.
A casual conversation between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping was recorded just after the five-member BRICS alliance decided to invite six more countries to join.
New members of alliance:
After much deliberation, the leaders of the BRICS countries decided on Thursday to officially welcome Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as new members of the alliance.
At a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the decision.
As on January 1, 2024, the new members would be included in the BRICS, according to Ramaphosa’s announcement.
He stated that the selection of the new members had been decided upon following the establishment of the growth process’s guiding concepts, standards, and protocols.
According to PM Modi, the grouping will be given new energy and direction with the admission of Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as members.
In his speech, Modi stated that many countries’ trust in a multipolar world will be further strengthened by the decision to enlarge the organisation.
