The California State Senate in the US passed a bill on Thursday to ban caste-based discrimination. This bill was passed by 34 votes against one. This would make California the first US state to add a race category to its anti-discrimination laws.
The people who introduced this bill told that a similar bill is being presented in the House of Representatives of the state, after which it will be sent to the governor for signature to give it the form of law.
All people will get equal housing, benefits, facilities
Introduced by Senator Aisha Wahab of California, the SB 403 bill adds race as a protected category to an existing law, the URUH Civil Rights Act, which provides that all people in the state of California are entitled to full and equal housing, benefits, facilities, services in all commercial establishmentsentitled to privileges.SB 403 provides explicit protections to those who have been systematically harmed because of race bias and prejudice. It also provides for deterrent legal consequences for those who seek to escape responsibility or influence for participating in or permitting caste discrimination and caste-based violence.
California became the first such state
After passing the anti-caste bill in the US Senate, California has become the first state in America where discrimination on the basis of caste has been declared illegal. Now if someone does casteism in California, he will have to pay a heavy price.
