Khalistan Rally:Taking note of India’s concerns, the Canadian government restrained a pro-Khalistan rally in Toronto and elsewhere, from storming the Indian consulate.
On Saturday, July 8, approximately 250 Khalistanis assembled in from of the Indian High Commission in Toronto. This time, there was a small crowd of pro-India supporters. A line of policemen separated the two groups.
All traffic towards the Indian consulate was stopped and no Khalistani supporter was allowed to approach the building.
Two Khalistanis arrested
Toronto Police have arrested two Khalistani protesters. One of them attempted to cross the police barricade and attack the pro-India crowd. The other person was apprehended for assaulting a policeman.
Toronto Police while responding to a query from Hindustan Times said that both persons have been let off without pressing any charges.
The Saturday rally was organized with the support of an extremist organization, Sikhs for Justice or SFJ. The Indian government believes that SFJ supports violence. SFJ says it doesn’t believe in violence.
In support of a terrorist
The Khalistan supporters in Canada had been planning this rally for several weeks. They had put up ‘Kill India’ posters on social media. Khalistanis also printed posters that identified Indian diplomats in Canada and called them murderers of Harjit Singh Nijjar.
The Indian government asked Canada to protect Indian diplomats and its consulates in Toronto and elsewhere. India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said any harm to Indian officials and property could affect New Delhi’s relations with Ottawa.
Nijjar was killed by unidentified gunmen outside a Surrey gurudwara last month. Khalistanis allege that the Indian government was behind Nijjar’s killing.
Nijjar was a wanted terrorist in India. India’s National Investigation Agency had put up a reward of Rs. 10 lac for his whereabouts.
Meanwhile, SFJ has threatened to besiege the Indian High Commission on August 15.
