Violence in Afghanistan
This South Asian country has been engulfed in violence for a long time. Afghanistan passed into the control of the Taliban after the United States pulled out of the country in 2021.
Prior to 2021, the US had supported a non-Taliban regime headed by Ashraf Ghani. In 2020, Washington signed the Doha Agreement with the Taliban, which mandated the American withdrawal from Afghanistan beginning in February 2021.
However, the Taliban have faced hostile opposition from non-Pashtun groups and ISIS- Khorasan. The non-Pashtuns were controlling Afghanistan before the Taliban stepped in.
On the other hand, the ISIS-Khorasan faction says the Taliban aren’t Islamic enough.
An Al Jazeera report says that 400 people have died in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in 2021. Furthermore, 70% of this number have been killed by ISIS.
ISIS-Khorasan
This radical Islamic group was founded by disaffected Talibani members in eastern Afghanistan. ISIS-Khorasan takes inspiration from the ISIS of Syria and is active in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Also known as Daesh, ISIS-Khorasan wants to establish an Islamic caliphate in much of South and Central Asia. Daesh’s members come from several countries like Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan and also India.
